History
A play about Autism
Glass Ceiling Arts Collective was formed in early 2020, with a presentation of a new work called The Incredible and Glorious World According to The Fitzroys, as part of the Auckland Fringe Festival. The show is about a young boy with autism, and was a wonderful opportunity for audiences to explore their own perception of disability. The show was a great success and we were all delighted to win Best Performance (Ensemble).
Inclusive youth musical theatre in Auckland
Meanwhile, our inclusive youth musical theatre group, which is based on the North Shore but attracts young participants from all over Auckland, had just started rehearsing for Disney’s Peter Pan Jr., with performances set for June 2020. Unfortunately, our world was thrown into disarray with the COVID-19 pandemic, and Peter Pan Jr was forced to cancel.
However, our young performers, many of whom have a disability, are a resilient lot, and so we quickly adapted our approach and turned to digital technologies. Thank goodness for zoom! You can read more about this “interesting” and dynamic period in the news section on this website.
Our inclusive youth musical theatre group finished the 2020 year on a high with a wonderful variety performance, aptly named One Helluva Year! for friends and family.
Multi-sensory theatre for a global audience
Thursday 3rd December 2020 was also the day we acknowledged the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the release of our multi-sensory theatre experience, The Badger Story.
The Badger Story is a very special and innovative digital project, borne from the COVID-19 lockdown, which is targeted to people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD) and other high health needs and their families.
It’s a theatre experience that can be enjoyed in the home and, because it’s streamed online, is available to audiences throughout the world.
Shrek The Musical Jr.
The wonderful young performers who are our inclusive musical theatre group, based on the North Shore, presented Shrek The Musical Jr. to sell out audiences at The Rose Centre in Belmont, in April 2021.
Our story will continue here, in due course. Please return for more updates and/or sign up for our newsletter below.
