Introducing our new Auckland Adult acting programme
On the whole, New Zealand is well set up to support young people with disabilities; the local DHB appoints a paediatrician to support the health needs of each child and they go to school up until the age of 21 years. ๐
At 21 years of age though, to a certain degree, the system abandons them. As a 21 year old young adult with a disability, they lose access to their expert paediatrician in favour of a generalist local GP, and the usual options like tertiary education, travel and employment are not readily available to people with disabilities. ๐ข
Our midweek Glass Ceiling Auckland Adult class aims to address the profound need for rich and engaging activities for disabled adults. ๐
All the participants, many who have graduated from our youth programmes, have a passion for the performing arts. They would love to find a pathway to training and employment, as they consider a career in the Arts industry.
This Glass Ceiling class has a serious theatre focus, upskilling the participants in the skills they need to continue on their journey, whether it be drama, voice, whatever their choice is.
These are more than simple weekly drama classes too. Itโs a meaningful 18 month long training programme, led by acting professional John G Davies and supported by Jayshri Ratnam, whereby the participants will be supported to create their own theatre work which will be presented to public audiences in 2025. ๐ญ
Glass Ceiling firmly believes that the world will be a much better place if we all support people with Disabilities to have rich and exciting careers, just like their peers in the mainstream. ๐
If you know any aspiring actors who would like to join our Auckland Adults acting programme, please tell them to register today. ๐ญ
