Lockdown reflections from a mum.
Reuben, 14, and Kate, 11, are 2 creative siblings who are full of curiosity, adventure and endurance.
The lockdown has given them a lot more time to do many other things. They have lots of sibling time and their relationship has grown stronger. There is time for climbing trees, cooking and eating, biking to search for eels, playing badminton and hide and seek (we are running out of places to hide in the house), rock painting and sleeping.
They do miss their daily routine of being at school and dance studio, though. Reuben misses his school friends, teachers and his lovely teacher aides. Kate misses her library time but quite enjoys studying from home. Reuben said the lockdown has let Mother Nature breathe.
They climb the backyard plum tree daily. Reuben loves to be on higher ground, Kate just loves following Reuben around and enjoys his activities. They also bike everyday, weather permits, to find eels in the drain and stream in the nearby parks.
They learn to cook from school and YouTube. (Reuben has incredible taste buds.) With a little assistance, they have made jacket potatoes, Vietnamese Style Pork, chicken nugget (Reuben’s favourite), dimsum, quiche, cottage pie, macaroni cheese (Kate’s favourite) and nacho cheese.
Reuben gets to spend more time on his Pinterest on mainly fish and creates more hilarious comic strips. He also gets to repair his soft plastic lure and is making a test pond. That is his obsession beside food.
Saturday is Peter Pan Day. Reuben would wake up every Saturday and say that we have Peter Pan today, whether he is in the rehearsal or not. They love to see everyone on the computer screen. It is their happy and fun place together. We have a talented teacher who sings like an angel. She is very patient and a good listener. They can’t wait to get back to the studio to meet everyone in person again.
We know the lockdown will be over one day. They are making full use of everyday as it comes, while we are gifting with its presence.
